Most peope believe that in order to upgrade Windows XP Home , to Windows XP Pro you need an upgrade disk to do so. Most often than not, people have a retail disk lying around, come upon a computer with Windows XP Home, and think they need to go out and buy an upgrade disk. This is not the case. You can turn a retail disk, into an upgrade disk that takes OEM keys.

This is how:

There are two things to realize before starting this.

1. All Windows disks have all of the information required to do what ever it is you want with them. So an OEM, Upgrade, and Retail set of disks, are all essentially the same. The only difference is in the SETUPP.INI file. With a few small changes, you can make this happen.
2. The CD Label you set the cd to is important. Windows XP is very specific about what CD label is set. You can get a list of the CD labels with examples here.

Essentially you’re only going to be making a minor change to the SETUPP.INI file.

First, insert your copy of Microsoft Windows XP HOME (or what ever XP you’re upgrading from) into the cd drive on your computer.

Copy all of the files from the CD into a directory on your computer.

Navigate to the i386 directory. The SETUPP.INI file should be in there. If not, search for it, it’s there no matter what.

You’re going to be changing the PID data in the file to tell the software:

1. That it’s OEM, Retail etc and -
2. Whether the license key is OEM, Retail, etc.

So essentially you can a Windows XP cd that is retail, but accepts OEM cd keys.

Now, for the actual values. Remember the first and last values are interchangable, but usually you’d keep them as a pair:

Retail = 51882 335
Volume License = 51883 270
OEM = 82503 OEM

So if you wanted a retail CD that took retail keys, the last line of your setupp.ini file would read:

Pid=51882335

And if you wanted a retail CD that took OEM keys, you’d use:

Pid=51882OEM

In sum, what you do is to copy the entire CD to a directory (name is immaterial, I called mine xpprocd), then edit the SETUPP.INI file, then burn that to a new CD… and you’re in business. Install the CD as an upgrade rather than a new installation, and a half hour or so later, you’re in exactly the same shape as if you had saved all the data, formatted the drive, installed “new”, reinstalled all the 3rd party software, restored all the data… except that, of course, it’s taken a lot less time and trouble.
